When Jen and I first started dating, I had a TV and no stereo and she had a stereo and no TV. It seemed like a great match, and for a long time we got by with what we had. About 4 years ago I decided to upgrade our TV and went from the old 27″ tube that we had to a Panasonic projection TV which at the time was a totally fantastic TV. Recently though the LCD projection technology has started to show its age so I talked myself into buying a new Sharp Aquos. The new LCD technology has come a long way and looks really amazing. Especially with the 1080i HD signal that we can get from Comcast, it is a beautiful picture.

Compared to the new TV, our sound system was starting to look very old. Back in 1985, Jen bought a new tuner and a used receiver and speakers and they were just good enough that we got by with them. When we were in a smaller house and the entertainment center was right there, it was easier to put on music more often. But it’s been almost 11 years now of living in our new house and it’s steadily gotten to be more and more of a pain to listen to music. The old components don’t have a remote control so you always have to go over there and fiddle with it by hand. Before the kids, I’d make an effort to do it but with the kids around it just became too much of a hassle.

I let Ariel talk me into going to a high end audio store in Palo Alto called The New Audible Difference and after spending about 3 hours listening to music, I emerged with a NAD T765 receiver and some Revel F12 speakers. I ripped my CD collection to disk and put them on the Mac mini in the office and bought a Squeezebox and now we can control the sound system from any laptop using a web page.

The TV and receiver arrived a couple of weeks ago, the Squeezebox came in last week and the speakers finally arrived today. It is amazing how much more enjoyable it is to listen to music and watch TV now! I can’t believe that I waited this long to upgrade our sound system. Now I fear that I’m going to have to wire up the rest of the house with speakers.. this could be a very expensive experience

Hot on the heels of a great October, we’ve been having a really good November. Jen’s business is going very well (but I’ll let her blog about that). Google isn’t doing too badly either. I recently was promoted so now I’m a Senior Staff Software Engineer, which means that I’m beginning to get up there in the engineering ranks. That’s kind of fun.

Cole finished soccer and got a trophy for it. He’s turning into quite the jock. Ally is having a fun time with her soccer games. Both of them got fantastic report cards from school (and pre-school.. Circle of Friends does an amazing job of tracking preschooler progress). Those kids are growing up fast!

And finally, just today Datamation published an article about Gallery based on the interview that I did for them about Sourceforge a while back. And in other news today, I ran into Barack Obama at the Googleplex. I didn’t get a chance to talk to him, but I did get some photos of him checking out the nap pods on his way to give a talk at the Google cafeteria.

Life is good!

The kids like to talk about what they remember. A couple of days ago Ally started talking about how she remembers Cole’s first birthday. “I remember his birthday…there were a lot of kids and they were really loud and they were playing games. I was playing the games too, but on the inside.”

I was two months pregnant with her on Cole’s first birthday.

Today at breakfast, Cole asked me, “Mommy, is your heart still full of love after you die?” I asked him what he thought. “The love is there until your heart goes away and just your bones are left. Look it up, Mommy, and see.”

Google doesn’t have all the answers.

I told him that Google didn’t know the answer and he said “Everybody has a theory. If it’s not on the computer, then no one knows.”

A while back, I was invited to give a keynote at StarWest 2007 which is very conveniently held at Disneyland. They wanted somebody from Google to come give a talk about Testing on the Toilet, which has gotten lots of press and outside recognition including the Washington Post and the San Jose Mercury News (not to mention the New York Times). Antoine Picard and I answered the call and headed on down to Anaheim. Here’s a podcast introduction to our talk, and here’s abstract for our talk.

Jen and I figured that this was a good opportunity to take the kids to DisneyLand for the first time so we headed down on Tuesday evening and stayed until Saturday morning. The convention gave us a cut rate on rooms, covered two nights, my airfare and gave me an honorarium so essentially we could take a nice family vacation very cheaply. The downside was that the Disneyland Hotel was totally full so we couldn’t get a suite however, when I asked at the front desk if there was any way that we could get an extra room for the kids, they upgraded us for free into two adjoining rooms.

The room for Jen and I was pretty standard. But the room for the kids was amazing. The theme was Princesses and they each got a twin sized bed with princesse sheets. In a completely pink room with princess wall paper, a princess TV, princess lamps, princess princess princess. Ally was in heaven. Cole was pretty excited too.

We spent Wednesday and Thursday touring the park, going on rides and generally having a great time. Our preparation for this trip was to buy
Unofficial Guide to Disneyland, a tip from Anne Murguia. I read the book on the plane and in the hotel room on Tuesday evening and was amazed at the lengths that the authors had gone to in order to figure out the most efficient way to see the park. They have it down to a science.. if you’re going, you should definitely get a copy of this book (borrow ours if you want). At the back of the book they offer touring guides which (they say) reduces the average wait time by 3+ hours. Jen and I were skeptical at first, but by about halfway through the first day we were believers.

The kids had never been on a roller coaster before and the very first ride we took them on was Splash Mountain. Exactly as the book said, if you get to the park a little early and go directly to this ride, there’s no line at all. We walked right through the line maze, got onto a our little log boat and took off. I sat behind Cole (who was sitting in the very front) and Jen sat behind Ally. The kids had no idea what they were in for and since there was no line, there was no suspenseful screaming to tip them off. After the first little drop of 5-10 feet in the semi-darkness of the inside of Splash Mountain, I could hear Ally crying behind me and Cole in front of me saying “I want to get off!”. By the 3rd little drop they had calmed down a little bit (after watching the animatronic little song and dance routine they have in the middle of the mountain), but we were building up the big finale which is a 50 foot drop straight down. The picture they took just after we went over the cliff (that we should have saved, but didn’t — doh) shows Ally crying and Cole just barely holding it together. By the time we got to the bottom Cole was shaken, but ok. Ally had made a miraculous transformation halfway down from fear to joy and I heard her yelling “wheeeeee!”

Splash Mountain became the acid test for all the other rides that we went on. By the end of two days in the park and countless other rides, they were excited for the prospect of going on it again.. but not on this trip. If we take them back next year, they’ll be ready.

On Friday, Antoine and I gave our keynote and it went very well. We got lots of laughs, and were invited to reprise our performance at StarEast. Apparently in 15 years they have never invite keynote speakers to return, but this talk was such a hit that they’d like us to come back. So we may be going to Disneyworld (Florida) in May sometime. They recorded the talk, I’ll post a link to it when it’s available. The rest of the day we spent at the Neverland Pool near the hotel where Ally made about 10 new friends and Cole went down their gigantic water slide about 50 times. Good times!

Update: It’s official — Antoine and I have been invited to attend StarEast, May 5-9 in 2008. Giddyap!

When it rains it pours. Recently I was approached by James Maguire from Datamation to talk about my experience with SourceForge. I’ve been hosting Gallery on SourceForge in one form or another for over seven years now, so they wanted to get a little supporting material about how SourceForge works for users. The result is this article which is pretty cool.

But even cooler than that, about two months ago I heard from Julie Bick, Jen’s roommate from Wharton. Julie has been writing articles for the New York Times about all kinds of fun topics. Recently she’s had a series of articles called “Preoccupations” where she gives readers a behind-the-scenes view into corporate life. I read through her article about laptops in meetings at Microsoft and thought it was great so I was game to talk about Google. Julie interviewed me over the phone and then together we wrote up an article about how Google engineers use their 20% time to do some amazing things: The Google Way: Give Engineers Room. Check it out!
