Farewell, VA. Hello, Google!

I’m unemployed! Well, just for a couple of days. I’ve left VA Software and will be starting at Google on Monday.

It’s a little sad to be leaving VA. I was there for 2 years and had a thoroughly fun time. The team there was very tight and hugely fun to work with, and I got to be part of creating SourceForge 4.x from the initial design all the way through to shipping it to our customers. I made some good friends there and gained a tremendous amount of knowledge. I’m going to really miss hanging out with the VA engineering team most of all, though.

In the end, Google was simply too hard to pass up. I turned them down once, two years ago to go to VA and I don’t regret that decision. But it seemed like it would be crazy to pass up the opportunity now, the second time around. From the outside, they seem like a group of incredibly smart, talented and motivated folks that are making things happen and I want to be a part of that. After a lot of soul searching, I decided that it was a good time to make a change now that we’ve released SourceForge 4.1 and are at a reasonable stopping point and it seemed opportune to try to get to Google before they go public.

So on Monday, I have to be there bright and early at 9 AM for my HR orientation! It’s exciting, to be sure. I don’t know exactly what I’ll be working on yet, but I’m sure it’s going to be fun and challenging!

I will be curious to hear about your experience working at Google. I have heard that they make all of their employees work on some sort of side-project. In fact, this is supposed to be how GMail got started. Of course, that could have been a bad Internet rumor too :)
