Where does the time go?
Yikes, it’s been over three weeks since my last blog entry. I’ve been remiss. I haven’t really gotten the hang of blogging yet; I always feel like the stuff I’m going to say is totally trivial. But what the heck, you’re here so you can read it.
Jen and I are doing pretty well. I’m back at work and things have returned more or less to normal, except for occasionally when Ally doesn’t sleep so well and we wind up wandering around the house like zombies. Thankfully we haven’t had too many occurrences of that lately. Now, on to the news that you really want to hear.
Ally is six weeks old and is growing noticeably day by day. She’s made the transition from being a squalling, wrinkled little newborn to an alert, bright eyed infant. She still sleeps most of the time but now she has extended periods of wakefulness hust in the past week she has started smiling. It’s nice to see her personality developing. She got her first bottle recently and did pretty well with that so it looks likely that we’ll be able to take turns feeding her. Of course, she is the cutest girl baby in the world.
Cole has turned into such a little boy. He learned how to run, and now that’s pretty much all that he does. He runs to his room, gets a toy, runs back, shows it to us, runs over to the couch, hides it in the cushion, then repeats the process. What he lacks in running style he makes up three times over in raw enthusiasm and skinned knees. He’s also incredibly verbal now and knows hundreds of words. It’s getting hard to tell which words he knows and which he doesn’t because he repeats everything we say. Everything. Even the naughty bits, which we’ve been trying so hard not to say. It’s true what they say about little pitchers having big ears. Oh, and he’s learning how to play video games .. just like Dad.
It’s fun to see the way Cole’s mind works. He finds something that he likes and that is all he wants to do and talk about. For a while there he was really into trucks and trains. Driving around with him in the back of the car was an exercise in hearing him happily greet them (”big big truck!”) and then sadly bid them farewell as we passed (”bye bye mail truck”). He absolutely loves his yellow bus (”big, big deddow bus!”). But recently he’s moved onto a new passion: basketball. Now he’s fascinated with basketball and anything that can possibly be construed as basketball-like (balls of all shapes and sizes, rocks, bits of lint, etc). Last week we went up to the school for our family outing and stumbled upon a real live basketball. Cole was in heaven. It was perhaps the saddest thing ever when he had to leave it behind.
Cole’s fascination with basketball coincided around the time that Liz (”grandmom!”) came to town to visit. She stayed with us for about a week and a half and she and Cole bonded faster than krazy glue. Even today if you ask Cole “who’s coming to visit?” he’ll shout out “GRANDMOM!!!” and get all excited. During her visit, she watched the Sixers play basketball on our new TV and Cole got to watch too. He was so excited to see basketball that he’d get right up in front of the TV and start pressing the buttons which would eventually lead to him turning it off. Bad Cole, no biscuit. The whole Overholt clan put in an appearance, but of course we only got a picture of Cora. Oh, and some cute ones of Cole and Jim’s cats
Sharm, Rob and Asha also came by to visit. They were in town for a wedding in Berkeley but made time to come spend a morning with us her at our house. It was great to see them and really fun to see Cole and Asha playing together. We took a ton of pictures, but afterwards we realized that they were all of Asha and none of Sharm and Rob :-(. Doh.
And finally, the obligatory kid story. Before Sharm and Rom left, we put both the kids down for a nap at the same time. They both went into Cole’s room, but we put Asha in Ally’s crib (after lowering the bottom of the crib so that it was suitable for an older kid). We read them stories, got them settled in and then left. They yelled for a while then started babbling then just as they were getting quiet there’s this huge crash and Asha starts screaming like the house is on fire. Of course we rush in there and find that bottom has fallen out of the crib dumping Asha on the floor! She’s howling. Cole is howling. Sharm is remarkably calm. We get Asha out of there and she calms down, but for next day or so every time Cole saw that crib he would very seriously say “Asha BOOM!”
Hope all is well in your part of the world.
